Saying YES to adventure: My magic night on Catalina
It was spontaneous. We both had three days off. We love each other’s company.
Tristan (they pronouns) works for the boat company that ferries people to and from the island. They were able to get me on board for $8! Perfect recipe for adventure. We set sail into the sunset.
Their parents have a house on the island, but were back on mainland, so we stayed there.
We wandered around into the setting sun, gazing at the lights and the boats and the people! We stopped by the candy shop and i felt swept away by the whimsical scents and the feeling of childhood. It’s a feeling that I let lead the way this trip. We bought an espresso float and strolled around in the darkness, seeing stars.
We crawled our way onto the dark golf course of the island. The danger of getting caught made it all the more exciting, but we slowly wandered out into the emptiness. In the distance, two deer were grazing on the grass, and we could barely make out their figures. Above us: STARS. So many stars, the most stars I have seen since… I can’t remember when. The milky way cut across the sky like a wedding veil caught in the wind. The air on the island was still, and chill.
I don’t know how long we stayed there. Eventually we wandered back down to the house.
We watched Moonrise Kingdom and fell even harder in love. I grabbed my camera and we headed back out, the opposite direction of the golf course.
A deer with one antler lead the way.
The streets were so empty except for us and this sauntering creature.
It was timid, kept its distance… but allowed me to follow it close enough.
We went farther into the night. Tristan told me stories and we held great conversations. They were so patient any time I wanted to stop and photograph things, which was often.
We returned home and slept until noon.
In the morning we went swimming and enjoyed the crystal clear waters.
I was living in the moment so hard. This trip was a much needed escape. I’ve returned with the worst sunburn of the century, but it was WORTH IT.
